Beaufort County is located on North Carolina’s east coast. One of the state’s oldest counties, Beaufort is home to more than 47,000 people and encompasses 828 square miles.
Since the Trust invited Beaufort County to participate in Healthy Places NC, we’ve been meeting with a number of individuals and organizations including the Washington-Beaufort Chamber of Commerce, the school system, local government leaders, Cooperative Extension, health care providers and groups of local residents.
There are some interesting programs already underway in the community, and the Trust is working with local residents and organizations to determine what comes next.
Some of the great initiatives we’ve heard about include:
- The community came together to create a vibrant public space and park on the Washington waterfront.
- Public housing residents are now gardening in their back yards through a fabulous public-private partnership.
- Your hospital system is investing in local projects to help improve health well beyond their own doors.
Access to quality health care is expanding.
