Located in central North Carolina, Burke County encompasses 515 square miles and is home to approximately 89,000 residents. With the Pisgah National Forest comprising the northernmost section of the county, the scenery and recreational opportunities of the area are some of Burke County’s greatest assets.
As the Trust begins work with the residents of Burke County as a part of the Healthy Places NC initiative, we look forward to forming partnerships with a wide number of individuals and organizations, including the Burke County school system, the local government, the Burke County Chamber of Commerce, the Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge, the Community Foundation of Burke County, as well as groups of neighbors and residents. Despite the health challenges facing the County, already impressive health-related work is taking place. For example, the Burke Substance Abuse Network and the emerging county-wide wellness movement led by Carolinas HealthCare Systems, local funders, and faith community leaders, demonstrate the strength of local connections that can improve health outcomes. The Trust looks forward to building on local partnerships as we work together to build a healthier Burke County.
