Edgecombe-Nash Counties

The Twin Counties of Edgecombe and Nash comprise just over 1000 square miles of Eastern North Carolina. Home to more than 150,000 residents, Edgecombe and Nash counties share a rich history, as well as economic and political ties that unite them.

Despite challenges facing the region, the community is energized, and the Trust is looking forward to partnering with Edgecombe-Nash residents to tackle health challenges head on through the Healthy Places NC effort. Since the Trust began working in the Twin Counties, we have connected with a number of residents and organizations, such as local government leadership, the school system and the Chamber of Commerce to discuss the future of health in Edgecombe-Nash. Some exciting initiatives and ideas have bubbled up from these partnerships and discussions. For example:

  • Rocky Mount has been selected to participate in the White House’s Strong Cities, Strong Communities initiative, which is designed to strengthen local leadership, coordinate federal investment and spark economic growth in under-resourced communities.
  • A new community health center in Rocky Mount is being developed by OIC Rocky Mount. This project aims to provide access to primary care and pharmacy services for over 6,000 new patients three years into operation.
  • Down East Partnership for Children is working with two school systems to encourage the counties’ children to develop active, healthy lifestyles by transforming five school playgrounds into outdoor learning spaces. These spaces will include updated play structures, raised beds for gardening and pathways.
