Halifax County is located in the northeastern part of North Carolina, eight miles from the Virginia border. Located in the Roanoke River and Tar-Pamlico River basins, the county encompasses 722 square miles with a population of just over 57,000 people.
Since the Trust invited Halifax County to participate in Healthy Places NC, we’ve been meeting with a number of individuals and organizations including the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce, Haliwa-Saponi Tribe, Roanoke Rapids Parks and Recreation Department, Halifax County Cooperative Extension and Hobgood Citizens Group.
There are challenges, but the Trust has also noticed some impressive work in the area. The community came together to bring the Nurse-Family Partnership to Halifax County, which gives support to first-time moms. Teachers, families, faith community leaders and the Rural Health Group collaborated to provide health care to more people through the Weldon City School’s new school-based Health Center for students. And finally, we’ve noticed a huge community spirit, a desire to help people in need and a lot of energy to try new ways of tackling chronic community health challenges.
