Located in the foothills of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, McDowell County encompasses 441 square miles and is home to approximately 45,000 people.
Since the Trust invited McDowell County to participate in Healthy Places NC, we’ve been meeting with a number of residents and groups including the McDowell Senior Center, the faith community, the McDowell Chamber of Commerce, Marion Business Association, McDowell County Schools, the United Center, McDowell Housing Coalition, McDowell Tourism Development Authority, McDowell Hospital, and the McDowell Health Coalition.
While McDowell County faces a number of health challenges, there are positive signs of community collaboration across sectors including the Farmer’s Market, the Greenways, and the Lunch Bunch project. These partnerships make good use of limited resources in McDowell County to improve the health of the community.
