Poor and Needy Division Announces 'Second Wind Initiative'
Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Dear Colleagues,

The time has come to plan for our Poor and Needy Division’s upcoming grant application cycle.  The deadline for grant applications is July 15, 2010.  As many of you know, the Poor and Needy Division has not accepted applications nor made new grant commitments for the past year due to the economic downturn and our existing commitments.  We are excited about the opportunity for a new grantmaking cycle.

We are concerned about the effects of these economic times on low-income individuals and families in Forsyth County as well as the nonprofit organizations which serve them.  We are also aware that the biggest challenges to our county’s social service system may have not yet surfaced.  We have limited funds available for new grant commitments at this time, but we want to target those funds in a way that is responsive to the current situation and mindful of the future.  We believe that family stabilization in a time of economic crisis is important.  Strengthening core organizations who serve those families is critical, too.

For the upcoming Poor and Needy Division grant cycle in July, the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust anticipates making up to 15 grants for $50,000 each. These grants, known as the Second Wind Initiative, will be for continuation of current programs and services for smaller organizations that are serving the financially needy in Forsyth County.  Please visit our website at http://www.kbr.org/page.cfm?page=37&url/second-wind/ for further details about this Request for Applications (RFA).  If you are interested in applying for the Second Wind Initiative, please contact Lori Fuller, Director of Evaluation, at 397-5505 or lori@kbr.org. Please note that, as usual, you must have a meeting with a KBR staff member prior to submitting a grant application.

Also, the Poor and Needy Division will not be accepting any capital grant applications for either of the next two application deadlines—July 15, 2010 and January 15, 2011.  This decision is due to the limited funding available for the coming months.  We will make further decisions about our ongoing policies related to capital funding and share them with you when we do.

Thank you for everything you and your organization do to improve the quality of life of low-income people in Forsyth County.

Sincerely,

Karen McNeil-Miller

Health Care Division Announces September 15 Deadline for Fall Cycle Grants
Tuesday, June 15, 2010

The Health Care Division announces its September 15 deadline for fall cycle grants. While not yet returning to pre-downturn grantmaking levels, the Trust will be offering grantmaking in the fall cycle that responds to a broader range of our program interests. Additionally, we will focus on the least resourced communities in the state, limiting applications to organizations based in Tier One counties or an existing programmatic presence in Tier One counties.
