Triad, Northwest NC Counties Among Top in State for Substance Abuse Deaths

Nearly half of the 14 counties in the Triad and Northwest North Carolina are on the Top 20 list for deaths related to substance abuse statewide, a nonprofit agency says.  Surry County has the region’s highest risk ranking for substance-abuse related deaths and is fourth in the state, while Ashe County is eighth, according to the Partnership for a Drug-Free N.C. Inc.

Foundation Funding to Improve Health in Rural Areas

In a June 25, 2013, speech to the National Rural Assembly, health and human services secretary Kathleen Sebelius mentioned several “challenges that rural areas face,” including the fact that rural Americans are less likely to get health insurance through a job—so they are “more likely to have to buy it on their own.” Lee L.
