For the weary traveler, I-95’s Roanoke Rapids exit, just south of the Virginia border, is a welcome oasis. The town offers a spate of motels, a smorgasbord of fast food options and a Starbucks. The tourist dollars are much appreciated by the people of Halifax County, a county where 31.6 percent of residents live below the poverty line.
