The Community Health Center Development Initiative: Working to Increase Medical Home Access in North Carolina
At the end of 2009, the Trust made a $400,000 grant to the North Carolina Community Health Center Association (NCCHCA) to support prospective Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) through the developmental and application process. North Carolina is severely underrepresented in both FQHC numbers and distribution, particularly in light of the income and access barriers pervading many regions throughout the state.
The grant dollars are to be used for technical assistance in the development of these federal applications and for the small local matching contributions that will make applications as competitive as possible. It is estimated that upwards of 20 communities will be positioned for FQHC application submission when a federal RFP is released sometime in 2010-11.
The Trust continues to work closely with the NCCHCA in this effort, as well as with state and local organizations addressing the issue of medical home access.
