Federal Changes Threaten Health Care Access in North Carolina

Image of Access to Care Fact SheetThe 2025 budget bill includes a combination of burdensome work requirements for Medicaid members (although the majority of members are working, going to school, or serving as caregivers) and freezes on provider taxes the state uses to fund Medicaid expansion. Without state action these changes could trigger an NC law ending Medicaid expansion, which would eliminate coverage for more than 680,000 people.

Federal Changes Threaten Food Assistance for North Carolina Families and Children

Image of Food Assistance Fact SheetThe 2025 budget bill shifts SNAP costs to the state, potentially forcing North Carolina to end the program. The bill expands work requirements for SNAP to parents and older adults, and ends eligibility for many lawfully present immigrants and refugees. Approximately 1.4 million seniors, children, and working residents could lose access to affordable food. Helping families with low incomes meet their basic needs isn’t a handout. It’s sound public health policy.
