The Centers for Exceptional Children

Programmatic support to launch a pilot project to implement the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) Stepping Stones Initiative for financially disadvantaged families with children five and under who have disabilities. The project addresses the problem that too few children with special needs have access to the services they need, and too few parents of children with special needs are aware of the resources available to them. The Stepping Stones Initiative will consist of two program paths: 1) Seminars Series designed to be a brief introduction to the principles of positive parenting; 2) Intensive group sessions involving six (2.5 hours each) group sessions that educate and actively train participants in independent problem-solving skills. Group sessions also include three, 30-minute individual consultations to refine parenting skills. A full behavioral and family assessment will be completed before and after the group sessions. Anticipated outcomes would be new skills gained to manage behaviors, improve family well-being, and reduce child abuse.
