Small Area Health Insurance Estimates

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Small Area Health Insurance Estimates program (SAHIE) is the only source of data for health insurance coverage estimates for all counties in the U.S. In addition to showing coverage by geographic area, data can be broken down by race/ethnicity, sex, age, and income levels. The estimates are developed by combining various data sources including the American Community Survey, the census, federal tax return information, public assistance programs, and others.

This data source can be used to understand and compare health insurance coverage in different communities and disparities that exist in insurance status; these comparisons can be used for advocacy and program development.
