Healthy Places NC
Investing in the Power of Rural Residents
Healthy Places NC is the Trust’s work to improve the health of residents in our state’s rural and vibrant yet under-resourced rural communities.
Healthy Places NC: 10 Years That Changed the Way We Work
This report offers key findings about what the Trust and Healthy Places NC counties accomplished over this initiative’s 10-year life span. It identifies challenges and provides lessons for other communities and funders interested in rural place-based work.
10 Years of Healthy Places
What is the initiative up to now?
In 2022, the Trust announced we had reached our $100 million commitment to those counties and would expand the initiative regionally. Our work with rural communities continues under the Healthy Places NC name and includes a special focus on Eastern North Carolina, where data shows the largest health disparities exist by race and place in our state.
We're committed to community.
We continue to partner with community leaders, connecting them to regional and statewide initiatives that are working to change systems and improve health through Healthy Places NC. We work with community organizations to build the capacity of new leaders, bring unlikely partners together, and impact local, county, and state policies to support thriving communities and a healthier state.
We want to thank the grantees and partners in the original Healthy Places NC counties for their work.

Our goals today are expanding equity.
We’re leveraging local organizations and networks to promote equity in food and recreation systems, substance misuse, and address adverse childhood experiences. We have a special focus on communities of color, as well as Eastern North Carolina, where data shows the largest health disparities exist by race and place.
