New Hanover’s 17-year life expectancy divide fuels Hub’s reporting

It matters where you live. And it matters what we do about it.

In New Hanover County, where you live can make a difference of as much as 17 years in how long you can expect to live.

That number stopped us in our tracks.

A year ago, members of the Coastal Journalism Hub gathered at the Cameron Art Museum to talk about the health issues facing our community. We were looking for a story that was too big for any one media outlet to tackle alone —something important to the whole community, something everyone needed to know about.

We started here: What does our community need to understand about health, and how can journalism help us understand it?

As a nurse-midwife and the Hub’s project manager, I came to that conversation with another question in mind: Could we create information and storytelling that not only informed people, but helped us see the conditions that shape health — and imagine what we might do about them?

Our group considered more than 60 ideas that day.
