American Community Survey

The American Community Survey (ACS) is a nationwide survey program conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. The ACS has 1-year estimates and 5-year estimates available. On a yearly basis, these data provide vital information for states and local areas on:

  • Citizenship status
  • Educational attainment
  • Income and employment
  • Language proficiency
  • Migration
  • Veterans
  • Disability status
  • Housing
  • Demographic characteristics

The ACS estimates are often used to track shifting demographics, learn about the local communities, and establish priorities, allocate funding and resources effectively, and for research and advocacy work.
