MacArthur-Bates Short Form Vocabulary Checklist: Level I

The MacArthur-Bates Short Form Vocabulary Checklist: Level I is a 89-word communicative developmental inventory for infants and toddlers, developed by the Cognitive Development Laboratory at San Diego State University. Level 1 short form is generally appropriate for use with children 8 months to 18 months old. It is available in both English and Spanish and can be completed by parents/caregivers or as interviews by professional. It is a cost-efficient tool to assess vocabulary comprehension and production for the use with age range from 8 moths to 37 months, which also serves as a screening tool on language delays with children.

More levels of the instruments and adaptions in other than English and Spanish languages are accessible on the website.

The checklist can be used to monitor a child’s progress in language development over time and help identify children who may be at risk for language delays or disorders, which can inform early intervention and support.
